Start by standing near the entry to your room and look to see where it seems empty. Not every space in a room needs to be filled, but it should look balanced. If you have a china cabinet with a chair on one side, it would probably work to have a large tree on the opposite side. If you have a large mirror on a wall and it lacks warmth, try adding small wall sconces with cascading greenery or florals on either side. You don't always need to have greenery in a container. Tuck it in wherever it needs a bit of color or softness. If you have a large clump of ivy, cut off several long pieces and lay them on your perfume tray or wrap them around the handle of your serving tray for a special touch. If all the items on your bathroom counter are at the same level, add some height by placing a tall orchid or floral arrangement in the corner. A large floral on a mantel adds color and personality to your room.

There are so many types and colors of flowers from which to choose. A colorful arrangement will add punch to a dining room or an entry table or to any room in your home. Permanent florals are an inexpensive way to update your rooms as the seasons change. Use large arrangements in large homes or rooms and scale down for smaller ones.

Contemporary arrangements tend to be more natural looking and informal... less structured. Try using twisted willow or soft green grasses, airy florals, pheasant feathers or even peacock feathers to get a wispy, unplanned look.

Artificial florals can be so realistic these days you have to feel them to know the difference. It's certainly easier if we don't have to worry about watering plants all the time. But if you do have a green thumb, by all means fresh florals are wonderful, but don't forget all the great looking options available today.
