Simple ideas for great windows.
Nothing finishes off a room quite like window treatments. Adding the right embellishments to your windows will add drama and style to every room in your home.
Long drapery panels add a touch of romance, while simple valances or cafˇ curtains will give you a more casual style. Whatever your preference, attention to window detail can add the finishing touch to a beautiful room.
Designer showrooms will make you beautiful window treatments that offer plenty of variety and style, but if you have a more limited budget, there are other options. Here are some of my favorite 'do it yourself' ideas:
For a 'no sew' window valance, buy a piece of 3/4" insulation board and cut with sharp utility knife to desired length and width. Cut two smaller pieces for the ends (3"-4" deep) and glue to main piece with hot glue. Cover with quilt batting and secure with straight pins. Cover board with desired fabric making sure to tuck raw edges under in back so it looks nice from the outside. You might also want to try adding a contrasting fabric or cording to customize your look. Sew small 5/8" cabone rings at each corner and hang on simple nails (if your valence is long, you may need some center support as well).
Buy a pre-made sheer curtain panel (you may need two if you have a wide window) several inches longer than you need. The panel should be 2-3 times the width of the window, depending on the fullness you desire. Cover entire rod with the panel and tie a large knot about 2/3rds of the way down from the top. This will give you a simple, yet elegant look.
If you really want 'simple' and are looking for a casual look, buy several pre-made cloth napkin squares and layer over a rod so the ends point down and hang evenly on both sides. Use at least three, but add more for larger windows.
No matter what your budget, everyone can have unique window treatments with just a little creativity.
