Get ready for fall.
Darkness is falling earlier. There are pumpkins and mums everywhere and a distinct chill is in the evening air. Fall has finally arrived.
Fall is a fun time to decorate your home even if your whole family isn't coming to visit for Thanksgiving. It's easy to make your home feel warm and welcoming. Add a fall wreath to your front door as well as a couple of large mums and a pumpkin or two on the front porch. Those with extra time could add some corn stalks and a hay bale and use old clothes to make your own scarecrow. Stuff clothes with crumpled newspaper until full. Add straw coming out of arms, feet and neck areas and gather at the waist with a belt. Add a large pumpkin for the head. This is a great project to do with the kids.
To decorate your home inside, start by buying lots of silk fall leaves. I use these everywhere. Place long stems into all your existing greenery or floral arrangements. Add a few small artificial pumpkins on a wire and place among the leaves. Add fresh or artificial gourds to your mantle with fall leaves and groups of candles.
Hollow out a small gourd or pumpkin and place a small vase of water inside. Add fresh flowers and fall leaves from outside and you have the perfect centerpiece.
Use a large garden urn and stack three pumpkins on top, starting with the largest on the bottom. Secure them with a garden stake through the middle and twist vines and berries loosely between the pumpkins for a fun and unique topiary.
Surround large candles with nuts and acorns from outside and don't forget a dish of colorful candy corn.
These simple ideas bring fall into your home and they're a snap to clean up when you're ready to bring out the Christmas decorations.
